We love our large-eyed Chihuahua dogs because of their devotion and personality. But at times, these small creatures are acting out in bad ways with annoying habits. Chihuahuas are very likely to bite strangers and owners

All dogs have the propensity to bite; it is in their nature. Some breeds, however, seem to have a tendency to nip and bite more than others. In July 2008, the journal of Applied Animal Behaviour Science published a study done by researches at the University of Pennsylvania. They surveyed and discussed with over 6,000 dog owners their experiences with aggression in their dogs. The researchers compiled a report containing 33 dog breeds most likely to bite.

Among them – guess who? Chihuahuas! But from that study we can also see that Chihuahua owners often complain, but it is known that most of them will do nothing to change their pet’s behavior. That is why a good Chihuahua training is essential when you chose to have a Chihuahua as a pet.

We love our large-eyed Chihuahua dogs because of their devotion and personality. But at times, these small creatures are acting out in bad ways with annoying habits. These are big dogs in a little package, and none are afraid to tell you so. Chihuahuas are very likely to bite strangers and owners.

To them, these habits are just normal dog activities, contrary to our standards of how they should behave. But since they dwell in the human world, they must learn to behave in such a way that is acceptable and conforms to human lifestyle and to keep the household a safe and peaceful place.

It is every owner’s job to make that happen. It is every owner’s responsibility to train it’s Chihuahua to stop the unpleasant habits. CLICK HERE to learn how to prevent your Chihuahua from biting.

When you start thinking about Chihuahua training, you also have to think about proper nutrition for your little friend. One of the most important decisions the owner of a small dog faces is what to feed the dog. Nutrition is certainly one of the most important aspects of Chihuahua care. A dog that weighs only four to eight pounds and stands only six to nine inches high – like the Chihuahua – has to watch it’s figure!

Chihuahua care is more difficult in this respect than, say, caring for a large dog. Large dogs can eat a lot more food than Chihuahuas, so they have more chances to get the nutrition they need. A typical Chihuahua should eat only about a cup and a half of food a day.

The Chihuahua has to eat high quality food to keep up its stamina and to maintain healthy teeth, gums, skin, and coat. Owners who are experienced with Chihuahua nutrition know that feeding the best diet for a Chihuahua can prolong the dog’s life and enhance its lifestyle.

If you’ve ever taken your Chihuahua to the Veterinarian before, they’ve probably told you not to feed your dog table foods. While some foods may be OK for them to eat, there are still many foods and ingredients that can be dangerous or even fatal to your Chihuahua. To be on the safe side, it is best to listen to your Veterinarian and avoid feeding your Chihuahua table foods at all. Stick with feeding them a premium dog food made for your dogs size.

Ever heard the old saying that chocolate can kills dogs? Well, some chocolate can be very dangerous to dogs, causing seizures, coma, and even death. You should always keep your chocolate stored in area that they would never be able access.

You might be thinking that bones are safe for Chihuahuas, but this is not the case. Bones, no matter what kind, have been known to splinter and deal internal damage once they are inside a dogs body. In short, never give your Chihuahua a real bone!

As unusual as this sounds, raisins have been known to be extremely dangerous for dogs. Even in small amounts, they can cause kidney failure. So, be sure you never drop any raisins around your Chihuahua.

Too much salt can also cause kidney problems in a dog. While it may take much more for a larger breed, it doesn’t take nearly as much for a tiny Chihuahua.

Many fruits and vegetables are dangerous for dogs to consume. They can cause liver damage, breathing problems, heart problems, and more. Grapes, onions, tomatoes, avocados, and apples should all be avoided.

It might seem like there are a lot of dangerous foods to try and keep away from your Chihuahua. However, keeping your food away from them, and being sure you are only feeding them dog food can help your Chihuahua stay safe and healthy.

And what about Chihuahua puppies?

Make sure the food you get has plenty of quality protein in it. Some dog food manufacturers, unfortunately, will fill their food with “by products”. By products are inferior sources of protein such as chicken feet, intestines, beaks, etc. Needless to say these by products are not a very digestible source of protein. Be sure and look for a quality protein like chicken meal. Chicken meal is a very concentrated source of protein compared to chicken because the water has been removed. It should be your protein of choice.

The best food for Chihuahua puppies is small and bite size so it will be easy to chew up. Also, make sure they like the food! There is nothing more disappointing than buying a whole bag of “healthy dog food” and then having your Chihuahua turn his nose up to it. Some dog food companies offer samples of their food so your dog can try it first.

Look for health promoting ingredients that will help benefit your Chihuahua puppy and their overall immune system. These would include fresh vegetables, proteinated minerals, grape seed extract and probiotics. These should be listed in the ingredient list on the bag. So read your labels carefully to make sure you are getting the best puppy food for your Chihuahua.

Pregnant Chihuahuas

Care both during pregnancy and after pregnancy is vital to ensure the birth of healthy Chihuahuas free from illnesses and genetic defects. The first step to care during pregnancy would be adequate nutrition. As with humans, pregnant Chihuahuas require a greater intake of nutrients such as proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables to provide for their unborn little ones during pregnancy. It is important to consult your local veterinarian on your pregnant Chihuahua’s nutritional needs. In any case, good quality food is a must and Chihuahua owners should increase the quantity of food for their pregnant Chihuahua during feeding time. Insufficient nutrition can often lead to complications such as a malnourished puppy. Plenty of water should also be provided to enable sufficient hydration for the pregnant Chihuahua.

So, be very careful when you organize your dog’s nutrition. Consider it a foundation of a good Chihuahua training.

Hi, David here!

If you wish to learn how to turn your adorable pet into an obedient and well trained dog with proper Chihuahua Training – then you have come to the right site and I strongly suggest that you keep reading…

My wife Mia and I have a sweet Chihuahua called Munchkin. Our family friend Samantha once told us that there was a cute little puppy in a local dog shelter. A pup was abandoned, had no home, and they were crowded in a shelter so no one could tell what faith had prepared for that puppy. Our friend worked there as a volunteer at the time, and she knew that my wife wanted a dog. I must admit, I wasn’t quite happy with the idea.

When we first saw Munchkin, I didn’t know what to think. He was cute, had that “something”, but he also had so much energy. All I knew about Chihuahuas at the time was that they bark a lot and that just ment days of headache for me. But my wife fell in love with that pup and that spark in her eye ment – Munchkin was coming home with us and I would have to live with it.

And I did, for the first few days. Because everything Munchkin did was sweet and cute. And forgiven. Because our whole house was Munchkin’s playground, and “pottyground”, and ”sleepingground” and “barkingground”.

And then I realized that it was just wrong! It’s nice to have a pup but it can’t do just everything it wants. What about when puppy becomes a grown up dog? I wasn’t prepared to clean the mess every five minutes, or try to discover where my Chihuahua is hidden when I want to put it on a leash…

“Honey, we need to do something! We love Munchkin, but we have no freaking idea how to raise him properly” – I said to my wife. Surprisingly, she agreed. But where to start?

Thank goodness for the internet. Our search was pretty fast because our friend Samantha also recommended this site to us, but I just couldn’t find time to check it out earlier.

So there it was, we started learning the secrets to Chihuahua dog training.

And I must admit that it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, neither for Mia and me, nor for sweet little Munchkin. Because it is, as we learned, something that really has to be done – you have to train a Chihuahua. And it has to be done in a proper way, you can’t just guess what to do next, and hope that your Chihuahua would become the world’s most obedient dog.

As we have learned, it is best to start with Chihuahua training while your pet is still a pup, but dog’s behavior can be corrected at any age. Also it is vital that you train your Chihuahua at home. Some expensive professional training schools won’t do any good because your Chihuahua would have to surrounded with other dogs during training, and many of them much bigger then your pet. Also, you will create a much stronger bond with your Chi if you do it yourself. But, you have to know how.

Did you know that most people who start training a Chihuahua never make it past basic house training? You may think it’s OK to not train your little dog, but he needs the right guidance and training to grow up to be an even tempered dog that everyone will love. Chihuahuas act very stuborn when training, so many people let their Chi walk all over them when in fact they should be using positive training methods to get it done right.

And here are just a few things you will have to cope with and do it right:

Crate Training

Potty Training

Obedience Training

How to deal with aggressiveness

What to do with separation anxiety

How to deal with constant barking

How to prevent your Chihuahua from chewing and biting

Socialization problems

Basic dog commands

Today, Munchkin is well trained Chihuahua and I am so glad that we rescued him from dog shelter. Our house is no longer a mess and Munchkin knows what to do and how to do it right. Even our friends ask how come we have such well behaved pet, and I tell them that you have to put some work into it, you have to know where to start, and it would be the most rewarding thing you can to for your pet.

So, if you wish to try a training program that I have used to train my adorable Munchkin, just

Many dog owners do not realize that their pet has separation anxiety. Sometimes the relationship between dog and owner crosses over to an obsession, which can actually go both ways. An owner's attachment to her pet can fuel further separation anxiety in her dog.

Most Chihuahua owners just don’t know how to stop separation anxiety in a puppy or newly adopted adult dog. When you adopt a Chihuahua, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that new dogs are trying to figure out the rules of their new household and puppies are probably testing them. Use this opportunity to let the new member of your family clearly understand the rules of the house.

Many dog owners do not realize that their pet has separation anxiety. Sometimes the relationship between dog and owner crosses over to an obsession, which can actually go both ways. An owner’s attachment to her pet can fuel further separation anxiety in her dog. An anxious dog will:

Follow you the moment you get up and leave the room.

Appear disturbed or excited when you make preparations to go out.

Exhibit extreme behavior when you return home even after a short absence.

Not want to be left alone either indoors or outdoors.

While many of the above actions taken in isolation could just be simple displays of attachment to their owner, a dog with separation anxiety will display problem behavior when left alone at home. This problem behavior may include, but is not limited to:

Persistent howling, barking and crying in the mistaken belief that it will the owner come back.

Chewing at doors and window frames in order to escape and find their owner.

Housetrained dogs urinating and defecating in response to their anxiety.

So, what to do? When you come home, the first rule is to not get excited and set the dog into a tizzy. This will only make the problem of separation anxiety worse. If you crate your dog while you are gone then wait a few minutes before letting them out. And remember – never let them out while they are whining, crying, or barking. Just wait for them to calm down first.

Also, keep track on how much exercise your Chihuahua is getting in a day. You have to know that a tired dog, is a good dog. Keeping the dog tired is one of the easiest ways to stop separation anxiety, because they will just want to sleep while you are gone – which is actually the whole idea. You want your dog to relax and chill out while you are away, not work himself up into an anxiety filled ball of energy. So, make sure your dog is getting all the exercise it needs. With a good Chihuahua training course that shouldn’t be to hard.

Chihuahua barking can be a serious behavioral problem and can mean the termination of the relationship with your dog or the dog itself if left untreated. Chihuahuas may be the smallest breed, but they are blessed with mountains of energy and affection. So, why is your pet Chihuahua barking?

Many Chihuahua behavior problems, such as house soiling, affect only a dog’s owners. However, problems such as excessive Chihuahua barking can result in neighborhood disputes and violations of animal control ordinances. Chihuahua barking can be a serious behavioral problem and can mean the termination of the relationship with your dog or the dog itself if left untreated. Chihuahuas may be the smallest breed, but they are blessed with mountains of energy and affection.

It’s perfectly normal and reasonable for dogs to bark from time to time, just as children make noise when they play outside. However, continual barking for long periods of time is a sign that your dog has a problem that needs to be addressed. Chihuahuas are excellent watch dogs, but they may bark excessively unless taught how to remain quiet.

First of all, before you even start with your Chihuahua training, you will have to determine why your pet is barking. Did you know that dogs can communicate by using ten different types of sound, ranging from whimpering to growling?

Your Chihuahua may be barking because he’s bored and lonely if:

- He’s left alone for long periods of time without opportunities for interaction with you.

- His environment is relatively barren, without playmates or toys.

- He’s a puppy or adolescent (under three years old) and doesn’t have other outlets for his energy.

- He’s a particularly active type of dog (like the herding or sporting breeds) who needs a “job” to be happy.

Your Chihuahua may be barking to guard his territory if:

- The barking occurs in the presence of “intruders”, which may include the mail carrier, children walking to school and other dogs or neighbors in adjacent yards.

A Chihuahua is not that difficult to potty train. Some people believe that a Chihuahua is actually easier to train the most other breeds. These little friends are very intelligent regardless of their small size. They are eager to please their owner and will learn commands quickly. The key to successful Chihuahua potty training is to be consistent. Once you choose your method for potty training stick with this method so you don’t confuse your dog.

To learn more about Chihuahua house training – CLICK HERE.

There are several methods of potty training and you should try them to see which fits you and your Chihuahua best. Just be sure you are not doing anything wrong, it would be best if you followed proven methods to house train your Chihuahua.

You can begin Chihuahua potty training at about eight to twelve weeks old. Remember that a puppy has a small bladder and therefore, cannot hold it’s urine for very long. A good rule of thumb to remember is that a Chihuahua can hold it’s urine for one hour per month of age. For example, a three month old Chihuahua should be able to hold it for three hours. The maximum time a full grown Chihuahua can go without eliminating is six to eight hours.

It is extremely important for you to treat your Chihuahua with patience and a loving attitude. Violence, aggression or intolerance towards your Chihuahua will not result in successful potty training. Chihuahua training is a rigorous time investment that you will enjoy later on when your Chihuahua has grown up. You will surely appreciate having taken the time at first and reap the benefits later on.

You can do everything right, but more than likely your Chihuahua will probably have an accident once in a while. You should remember to never physically scold your Chihuahua for having an accident. This can have a detrimental affect on their potty-training. Just a simple “no”, or “bad” is enough punishment for them.

Chihuahua potty training is not difficult. You must remember to be consistent and above all be patient. Some Chihuahuas can be potty trained right away while it may take a few months for others.

It’s really important for proper Chihuahua Training to teach your pet how to happily go into a crate at a young age. It can save a lot of drama and hassle in later years if you do it properly while they are young. Chihuahuas, like all other dogs when they are small, actually like to be in small, enclosed spaces. Being in an enclosed space actually gives them a sense of security, which can be very soothing for a young Chihuahua. You will likely find that they even spend a lot of time playing in their crate, without you even asking them to get inside.

A crate is another place for your dog to relax and feel safe. Usually made of metal, wire or plastic and should fit your dog perfectly. Some thinks that placing your dog inside the crate is inhumane but that is not how dogs see it. The dog will see the crate as his haven where he is safe and he can call his own.

Chihuahuas don’t “eliminate” in an area where they sleep – so it’s necessary to get them into the routine of sleeping in the same place, as they will learn that is their nap area. This is where the crate comes in. It’s just a part of their doggy nature – they won’t voluntarily make a mess in their bed. Keep some toys in there at all times so he knows this is a safe, warm environment.

Chihuahua crate training can also be of great benefit in housebreaking. Due to the primordial instinct canines have to avoid soiling themselves, crating lets you establish a schedule for your dog’s excretory functions. Unfortunately, not all dogs are so fastidious about where they choose to pass waste. In particular, puppies and older dogs may suffer from problems with crate soiling. Addressing this issue quickly is of the essence- a crate soiling habit will become more and more difficult to rectify the longer it is allowed to continue.

It’s important your dog never associates negative experiences with the crate, or he will refuse to spend time in their: A crate is not meant to be a place where a puppy is kept for hours on end. Puppies need their freedom, but encouraging a puppy to establish a sleeping area in there is not harmful in any way, as long as you are careful to ensure they get plenty of time to run around outside of it. If you train your Chihuahua correctly, he won’t see spending a few hours at a time in the crate as punishment.

Chihuahua training is a real challenge, but a very rewarding one. But, it should be done while your sweet pets are still puppies. Chihuahua puppies are so small, so you have to be very gentle and careful. They are frail and easily frightened so Chihuahua puppies training should be done in a proper way.

Think twice before taking your Chihuahua to a dog obedience training class at the local pet store. Often they are filled with large dogs and unprofessional trainers, which actually creates a dangerous environment for your Chihuahua. This is why more and more Chihuahua owners are learning how to teach their Chihuahua obedience on their own, in the comfort of their homes.

Old-fashioned force-training methods are ineffective and no fun for your dog either. Chihuahuas respond best to amendable training and only the gentlest of techniques.

Make your training sessions scheduled for a certain time of the day and keep them short, usually around 15-20 minutes. Chihuahuas tend to tire quickly and want to rest. Train your Chihuahua in an area free of distractions. Turn off your television, radio, and keep the kids away. If your Chihuahua is distracted he can’t focus on the training session.

Your job as puppy owner is to patiently guide your puppy in the right direction, based on what you expect from your puppy. A Chihuahua puppy faces extra challenges just because he or she is so small.

Puppy Socialization

Chihuahua puppy care should include proper socialization. Socialization best occurs before the puppy is 3 months old. Avoid frightening and painful experiences, and slowly face your dog with your everyday routine – other people, driving in a car, children, noises…

Behavior Training

Start early to guide your puppy’s behavior rather that waiting until you’re working with an adult. It’s easier to guide behavior in a small puppy than to correct adult behavior. Remember, punishment does not work. Chihuahuas seldom require anything but a mild correction.

Gentle training is a must for Chihuahua puppy training if you expect to have a well balanced adult dog. Discipline should never be done by slapping, hitting and kicking. It must be done with kindness and patience. Rough training is uncalled for very small dogs, such as Chihuahuas. Reward their good behavior with high praise and limited treats. Chihuahuas respond well to treats and positive attitude.

Chihuahua Puppy Potty Training

A common method for house training a Chihuahua puppy is the crate method. Puppies won’t usually soil their sleeping area. If the puppy has an accident, quickly carry them to the proper place. A few days of this close supervision will probably teach the desired behavior. Remember though that accidents will happen from time to time so be patient. Persist to get your pup to the right place for elimination and you will usually have a house trained Chihuahua.

Barking And Whining

First try to determine the reason for the barking and whining. Perhaps your Chihuahua puppy feels uncomfortable, maybe it is too full of energy? Part of Chihuahua care is teaching your puppy to handle isolation and separation. Dogs can’t get everything they want.

Biting and Chewing

Puppies bite and chew on body parts and clothes. Perhaps it seems sweet for a while, but this painful and destructive behavior must stop. Puppy biting and chewing that turns into adult dog biting and chewing is no laughing matter.

Much biting will be controlled if the dog has a chance to play with other puppies. If your dog doesn’t have enough interaction with other dogs, you will have to become the teacher. It is not easy but there are great dog training programs that you can follow at home to make your Chihuahua stop with inappropriate behaviour. You just have to set some rules and follow them.

* * *

Chihuahua training should begin early and always remember to be gentle and patient with your little puppy. Consistent discipline over a period of time will show you that Chihuahua puppies training can turn your little devils in a well-balanced pets you want.

Chiahuahuas are not the easiest dogs to train, but persistence and patience will work over time to make training successful.

The Chihuahua is now considered as the world’s smallest breed of dog in the world. It is now considered as a toy dog by many. On the other hand, Chihuahua training can show that this dog isn’t just a toy. However, where did this little breed originated?

Chihuahua history is very fascinating and goes back hundreds of years. The Chihuahua got its name from the state of Chihuahua Mexico. It is thought by some to be the oldest breed of dog in North and South America. It might even date back to the pre-Columbian Mexico.

To watch some nice selected videos about Chihuahua History, Breed and Training on YouTube, you can visit my Channel – CLICK HERE!

A theory stated that they came from an ancient breed called Techichi, which is a companion dog during the Toltec Civilization in Mexico. The Toltecs believed that the Techichi holds mystical powers. However the present day Chihuahua is now smaller than their ancestor because it may have been introduced to small dogs such as miniaturized chinese crested dogs. It was considered as one of the most popular breed by the American Kennel Club in 1904. However, geneticists considered the Chihuahua as a part of the modern breeds originating in the 1800s.

There are two types of Chihuahuas recognized, the short haired and the long haired. The breed standard is for a weight of 6 pounds and a height, no taller than 9 inches!

Chihuahua’s coat ranges from orange, fawn, sable, irish spotting, tan points, to even red, white and tricolor. There are also other Chihuahuas that have long coat, smooth coat which is sometimes referred to as short- haired. Smooth coat are dogs that has velvet touch or whiskery feeling to it.

Contrary to its size, Chihuahuas have a rather unique temperament. It can be easily provoked to attack since it’s naturally protective and territorial. They are not suitable to children as a pet because of their temperament and their tendency to bite when frightened. Most, if not all, Chihuahuas loyalty focus on just one person which make him feel jealous when that person gets too close to another. That is why Chihuahua training is very important.

Chihuahuas have a proud nature. Some Chihuahuas are even known to fight dogs bigger than them. They know little about fear which makes them quite good alarm dogs. They have keen sense of hearing due to its ancestral trace. With a good Chihuahua dog training they can become very obedient, while so adorable.

Chihuahua training is necessary, no matter what other people tell you. If you start training your dog, it will be one of the most rewarding things you do with your pet, especially with Chihuahuas. I am sure that you love your sweet four-legged friend. That is why your goal should be establishing even stronger bond with your dog, and you can do that through proper training. And imagine what you will face every day if you chose not to work with your dog – aggression, biting, barking, chewing, jumping, and bathroom “accidents”.

Chihuahuas are intelligent, but you already know that. On the other hand, Chihuahuas need to have some kind of schooling. Just because your Chihuahua lives a life of leisure does not mean she can’t learn tricks. Chihuahuas aren’t given the opportunity to show off like some of the other breeds, but they have so much to give and show. Obedience and agility trials give Chihuahuas a chance to show what they can do. But remember, training should be a fun time for both of you.

But where and how to start? You have to know that Chihuahua training can present some unique challenges that you don’t get with other dogs. Before you even start, you need to understand their nature. These little adorable dogs are fragile. For instance, Chihuahuas are not suited to be around children.

Chihuahuas are also one of the hardest dogs to house train. While some dogs will easily take to going outside to go to the bathroom, these little dogs seem to have a hard time grasping the concept that they shouldn’t poop on the floor.

Another potentially troublesome trait for Chihuahua training is stubbornness. These dogs are very smart and have a mind of their own. They also can be manipulative so you have to take a strong hand and be consistent with training. If you give them an inch, they will take a mile. They are also prone to non stop barking and erratic behavior.

These are all things you have to keep in mind when you start training a Chihuahua. But you shouldn’t think that it is hard. With a good training program, your little dog can be obedient, and also crate and potty trained. You can also teach your Chihuahua tricks like roll over, give paw, and high five. Here’s a tip, since Chihuahuas are so small, you can train them on your table, it would be easier for you. Just be careful – help your Chihuahua down when you are finished with training session.

Make sure your training sessions are short and fun. Always reward your Chihuahua for doing the right behaviors.

Remember – you can train your Chihuahua at home. This allows you to work on your own schedule and saves a bunch of money over formal dog training classes. You just need a proper and proven training program, but we will talk about that later…
